Malcolm facilitated a shift in our organisational culture to standardise behaviours and language across several business streams, prioritise workplace safety and provide the tools to maintain our strategic goals. A significant benefit arising from the Culture Web work was improved customer focus and service strategies. The process Malcolm used to do this work was uncomplicated and inexpensive as each improvement was an evolution from current practices.

The business benefits arising for PRG using a Culture Web led by Malcolm was bringing together multiple divisions’ cultures,  aligning the workforce with strategy, improving customer service and organisational cohesion. There was no “big bang” project needed when we used the culture web process to shift “just how we do things here.” We learned how to make the desired shift by understanding the role of the behaviours necessary to meet our goals. The work Malcolm did, drawing on collective wisdom helped us align safety and other business imperatives to deliver the culture we wanted.

I worked with Malcolm Deery for a 15-month period in 2017/2018 while he was on the board of Programmed. My contract was to deliver a Mental Health in the Workplace program to 450 of their group leaders.  Over that time I saw a company driven to engage deeply with its 30,000 staff, and was privileged to witness how well they owned their philosophy “if you see it own it”.  They had collectively committed to the  RUOK philosophy and held their people in high esteem, believing all people come to work to do a good job. The leadership team wanted to respectfully and with care reach out to those people with safety as their highest consideration, saying to me often  “We can’t be a leader if we injure our people”.  Their commitment to creating high-trust environments was highlighted to me in the way they invested in developing EAP usage,  which ultimately led to the development of an in-house Domestic Violence Program. These group leaders repeatedly bore witness to how they supported their people to flourish using empathy, brave conversations and sharing vulnerably.  There was a time in business when you left your personal problems at the door, and this has shifted with the rigour of Malcolms research and understanding of the human condition.  I commend Malcolm and the leadership model developed,   as I see it herald for us all new ways of being at work, rehumanising the workplace and harnessing the strengths of all to bring life to a caring culture!

I worked with Malcolm on a number of legal projects during his time at the Programmed Group (PRG), including being privy to his innovative work on transforming organizational safety culture for PRG and its customers via the Culture Web. Malcolm has a deep understanding of not just the practical elements of safety, but the human factors that motivate people to actively engage in their safety programs. I was so impressed with Malcolm's culture mapping, that I sought advice from him on the broader aspects of culture building, and utilised this advice to help navigate our firm through a merger process. Malcolm also presented to clients of mine, all of whom were equally impressed by his knowledge and passion. I strongly recommend Malcolm's consultative expertise to any organization, regardless of where they are in their safety journey.
